In 2004, Psychologists
held approximately 179,000 jobs throughout the U.S. Because of the
continued demand for psychological services in hospitals, mental
health centers, social service agencies, and substance abuse treatment
clinics, employment in this field is expected to grow faster than
average compared to other occupations.
In order to work as specialist
of psychology, you generally will need a doctoral degree. If you
are intending on working as a clinical or counseling psychologist,
you will need either a Ph.D. (Doctorate) or a Psy.D. degree. Those
with a Ph.D. typically qualify for a wide range of teaching, research,
clinical, and counseling positions in elementary and secondary schools,
universities, health care services, private industry, and government.
Those with a Psy.D. degree typically work in clinics or in private
practices, but sometimes they will also hold teaching or researching
positions. A Bachelor's degree generally qualifies an individual
to work as psychologist's assistant in a variety of settings.
Employment outlook for
those entering the psychology field is better than most, with median
beginning earnings of around $50,000 per year.
