Mechanical Engineers
(ME) research, produce, design, create, and test engines, machines,
tools, and other types of mechanical devices. They also design and
make tools that other engineers utilize in other specialty engineering
fields. This specialty encompasses an array of engineering disciplines.

Penn
Foster Career School offers an Associate Degree in Mechanical
Engineering Technology program that can be earned completely
online. Students are trained in technical mathematics, engineering
and fluid mechanics, mechanical design, technical writing
and tool design. The program is designed for those seeking
entry-level positions in drafting, tool designing, machine
designing, and other mechanical engineering technical areas.

MEs work on power-producing and power-using machines such as internal
combustion engines, electric generators, steam and gas turbines,
air-conditioning equipment, material handling systems, elevators
and escalators, industrial production equipment, machine tools,
and robots that are used in manufacturing. Because this type of
engineering is so broad, MEs can work in all kinds of fields such
as agriculture, maintenance, production operations, and technical
sales.
With the emerging technologies
of today, those with a Bachelor's degree as a Mechanical Engineer
can rest assured that their skills will be in high demand. More
than 220,000 Americans are employed as MEs today. The average annual
salary for a career as a ME is approximately $70,000. Most entry
level jobs in mechanical engineering require a Bachelor's degree.
As it is for others working
in technical and scientific occupations, it is also important for
MEs to continue their education throughout their careers. Much of
their value to employers is dependent upon their knowledge of current
technologies. By keeping up-to-date in their field, MEs are able
to provide the best solutions in their field and, therefore, are
of great value to their employers.
