Medical Billing and
Coding: The career you control
If
you are looking for a career that will bring you $40,000 a year
or more, but don't want to spend four years in college to get it,
you might consider a career in medical billing and coding.
As medical billing specialist
you will help the doctor or hospital keep costs under control, expedite
payment on behalf of both patient and healthcare provider, and prevent
the need for multiple submissions of statements to insurers. It
takes a person with an ability to attend to detail, operate in a
timely fashion, and facilitate communication between bodies that
are often at odds with each other.
Medical coding and billing
does NOT require a traditional college education consisting of multiple
general education courses. In fact, while it is not advisable in
today's complex medical world, it is actually possible and legal
to learn on your own with self study programs. However, to have
the most and highest paying opportunities, it is highly advisable
to enroll in one of the many certification training classes, many
of them available on line, that will award you a certificate when
you have finished the program.
Medical insurance coding
and billing is one of the fastest growing medical fields, and while
many people have entered the field, either in a large office or
from their own homes, the number of individuals who can correctly
code the insurance claims has not yet begun to catch up to the demand.
This field promises many
opportunities for advancement. Medical coders are also called "medical
records and health information technicians." They use a universally
recognized coding system to ensure that health care providers submit
statements with correct codes for compliance with federal health
care and insurance regulations. The following list is just a sample
of the many occupational titles a certified biller and coder might
have:
- Billing specialist
- Coding specialist
- Medical specialist
- Patient account
representative
- Claims analyst
- Claims processor
- Electronic claims
processor
- Reimbursement specialist
- Claims review
- Billing coordinator
- Claims assistant
professional
- Billing Coordinator
A career in this field
offers challenges, advancement and high pay. Since demand is so
high, they are usually hired readily. According to the US Labor
Department, an entry level job is available with only a high school
education, but due to the complex nature of today's medical codes,
many employers will only hire those with a degree or certificate.
Many schools have convenient payment plans, some of which even include
a laptop computer. Job assistance and student support are available
through either the traditional or online courses. Get started in
your search for the program that meets your needs and be ready to
start your Medical Billing and Coding career, possibly in as little
as 18 months.
