Medical Billing and Coding
is all about making and maintaining health care records. It involves
making records of medical observations, medical and/or surgical
interventions, diagnoses, results of tests, and treatment outcomes.
Coders/ billers organize and evaluate health care records for completeness
and accuracy and enter proper codes into computer records. Additionally,
they consult classification manuals and rely on their knowledge
of disease processes. They utilize computer software to assign the
patient to one of several hundred different "diagnosis-related groups."
This profession requires
highly accurate work and a very organized individual. Courses typically
include medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, coding data,
computer science, database management, legal aspects of health information,
and statistics. In 2004, Medical Billing and Coding Specialists
held about 159,000 jobs throughout the U.S. These individuals work
in a variety of settings, including hospitals, doctors' offices,
nursing care facilities, home health care services, outpatient care
centers, and professional services firms.
