Medical Billing and Coding is all about making and maintaining health care records. It involves making records of medical observations, medical and/or surgical interventions, diagnoses, results of tests, and treatment outcomes. Coders/ billers organize and evaluate health care records for completeness and accuracy and enter proper codes into computer records. Additionally, they consult classification manuals and rely on their knowledge of disease processes. They utilize computer software to assign the patient to one of several hundred different "diagnosis-related groups."

This profession requires highly accurate work and a very organized individual. Courses typically include medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, coding data, computer science, database management, legal aspects of health information, and statistics. In 2004, Medical Billing and Coding Specialists held about 159,000 jobs throughout the U.S. These individuals work in a variety of settings, including hospitals, doctors' offices, nursing care facilities, home health care services, outpatient care centers, and professional services firms.
